Shane Gray – Diving & Walking Holidays

Exhibitors, News

We offer one week guided walking holidays to The Hidden Canaries – the islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro

Companionship, pleasure, excercise, the thrill of high mountains, a touch of adventure and great party spirit. These are the ingredients walkers seek and we offer in the islands of Tenerife, El Hierro and La Palma.

Add in spectacular scenery, breathtaking views, glorious weather wonderful food and wine and …well, just send us your deposit now!!

The most Westerly and most remote of the Canary Islands is a complete contrast to the busy bustle of Tenerife.

Only 25 miles long, the island has an incredible concentration of natural forms, with over 1,000 volcanic craters, magnificent pine forests and juniper trees hundreds of years old and thrashed into grotesque shapes by Atlantic gales.

The high central plateau, a patchwork of green fields divided by dry stone walls could be the West of Ireland. Thousand metre sheer slopes afford magnificent views downward of the sunny sub-tropical paradise below.

To the West is La Dehesa ( the pasture) and a vast sweep of bananas, pineapples, papaya, almonds, avocado figs and of course vines from which the fine “Frontera” wines are produced.

Not surprisingly the islands economy is based on fruit growing, fishing and livestock. And not surprisingly, with no influx of tourists, the islanders are the friendliest of all the Canarians.

For complete relaxation in a “no news, no shoes” unspoilt little island this is it!

El Hierro Diving Holidays

I’ve found heaven on earth!

Its at the end of the world – or so they believed until Columbus discovered America. The zero meridian was established here and remained until 1860 when it was repositioned at Greenwich. Have you found it yet?

Only 25 miles North to South the Island of El Hierro nevertheless enjoys the best of all possible worlds. Pine forests at 5,000 ft, a green plateau with cattle and stone walls, and milk churns in the lanes. Banana and pineapple plantations. Grape vines, fig, orange and olive trees, and finally the coastline with all year tropical sunshine…….and No Tourists !

La Restinga

Is a tiny seaside fishing village at the Southern tip of the Island, located on the “Mar de la Calmas” (Tranquil Sea) which is a maritime reserve.Your seafront apartments are 3 minutes walk from the Dive Centre. In between is “El Bar” the only bar on the little promenade. It’s a further 3 minutes walk to the dive boat – and 10 minutes maximum boat ride to any of the 27 dive sites. This is Paradise!

The Diving

The Dive Centre facilities are excellent and with two large RIBS there is capacity for 20 divers. NITROX is free and gear rental is very cheap.  One week holidays are available on specified dates from October to May….Flights to Tenerife are available from Dublin, Cork, Shannon, Knock and Belfast.

This is the best Atlantic diving I have experienced. All year round sea temp. 21-24 degrees.Visibility 20m plus with abundant and colourful marine life.

* Now is when many people book their holidays and there is already a stream
of spring enquiries and  bookings coming in
*Now is when there are cheap flights available
* NO DEPOSITS – Just book your flights and send me the details – and your
place is secure !  100e deposits only due one month prior to departure
* BOOK EARLY to secure the trip you want. Demand for our holidays has of
course increased hugely over the years and 65% of every trip  now comprise
of repeaters, some of whom are on their fourth or fifth trip. So these trips
do fill EARLY! Don´t put it on the long finger and lose out.

surprise to those of you have dived with us in El Hierro that it is proposed
to declare it as Spain´s first Marine National Park. The major advantage of
this move is to ensure protection for the island´s rich marine ecosystems –
and to ensure divers can continue to enjoy the abundance and diversity of
the marine life into the future. The existing Marine Reserve in the “Mar de
Las Calmas” or tranquil sea, protected from the prevailing NE winds by
massive cliffs, will, in effect, be extended to cover the whole coastline
and will be monitored and supervised by the International Ocean watchdog

Kike and Pilar, our lovely friends who run the Dive Centre have now got
THREE large RIBs  in service .This means that bigger groups can all dive
together with no need for staggered dive times. They are also offering
Nitrox free to those qualified and gear rental is also free.

Just book your TUESDAY flights to/from Tenerife online with Ryanair or Aer
Lingus and I do the rest.   On arrival at Tenerife airport we transfer to a
hotel in nearby Los Cristianos and depart next morning by fast ferry to El
Hierro. Rental cars are ready and waiting at the port and there is a
beautiful, scenic drive across the island to the tiny fishing village of La
Restinga where we have lovely seafront apartments overlooking the marina.
The Dive Centre, “El Bar” and the village restaurants are all within a few
minutes´ walk. The return ferry docks in Tenerife at 1600hrs the following
Tuesday in good time to connect with your evening flights home. So, just the
first night in Tenerife and 6 nights / 7 days in El Hierro. There are five
days diving with ten boat dives, including tanks, air (or Nitrox), belts,
weights and dive guide. ALL gear is offered at NO rental charge, subject to
availability There is also an optional night dive (highly recommended!).

Prices rarely go down but we have managed to reduce the Dive Holiday price
significantly so now for all accommodation, all ferries, car rental and the
ten dive package the price is just 495euro. This is exceptional value for a
special dive holiday to a special destination. Another reason to book early!
A deposit of 100e is payable one month prior, by bank transfer. The balance
(395e) is payable by card or cash direct to the Dive Centre at the end of
the holiday.

“Great diving and a great holiday. Definitely going back to try the walking
as well. Looks completely magical”  (Claire, Dublin)  “Both Rosie and I had
an amazing week and feel so privileged to have shared our wonderful El
Hierro experience with such lovely people” (Seamus, Newry)  “Yet another
hugely enjoyable stay in El Hierro. Great food and wines, great company,
great sunshine and of course, as  always, great diving including new
sightings for me – a spotted leopard sea snake  and a Spanish dancer
nudibranch. El Hierro never disappoints” (Jean, Dublin)
